Contemplaing on Contemplation

Contemplation 9 (do you have ideas?) Mixed Media 18 x 18 deep, gallery wrapped canvas

As you can see, I was able to get into the studio a bit this weekend. Yippee! You might recognize some parts of this particular piece. I think a while back I was showing some things I had done on rice paper and one was this particular image. After that, I tore the painted rice paper into strips along with another painted rice paper which was done with similar paint however without the image. I then wove them together as you can see here and attached the woven piece to some other rice paper. This almost felt like loosely woven fabric...it was quite lovely to touch. So this hung around for a little while. Then I came up with this particular idea. The background has many, many layers of thin glazing. You might be able to see those if you click on the image to make it larger.

So for this one I am looking for ideas for the subtitle. As you can see it will go into the Contemplation Series, but I am not sure what to call it. Yes, my international friends, let me know your thoughts, too. Here are some I thought about, but was not sure how they might be received...Meditation, Focus and Silence.

So my questions are: Do you like any of these subtitles? Do you have other ideas which might come to mind when you view this work?

I look forward to hearing from you all...Have a Very Lovely Day!

Kim this is another beautiful painting. I'd chose mediation. I love the woven structure which unites different colours almost randomly, and the three squares, which, to me, look like one could really meditate well while looking at them, or like results of mediation. Little squares of warm light in a dark and cool environment

Thanks Andrea! Meditation....okay, that is one which really was positive for me, as well. I had hoped some of the paintings in this series would create a pause for people to consider their "internal life". We rush, rush, rush and maybe if there is something which might cause pause it could help just one person, for one moment at a time. You know? So, for that reason, Meditation works.

Thanks for your help here... when it comes to some words, I worry about how they might be perceived. And you know that all too well with my poor French! LOL

Difficult to always find a relevant name for this type of painting. And a fine painting it is.

however when I looked at the enlarged image - not thinking about your own suggestions - I focused on the woven part of the image. So many layers, so much intimacy..... and I stuck with that. Don't know if you have decided on meditation ( in itself a good enough suggestion) but thought I would leave my small contribution.

I really love this weaving thing you have going on Kim.

I kinda like:
"Contemplation/pause"
or
"Contemplation/rewind"

Arty! Thank you so much for your kind words! I am glad you like the painting.

I have not decided on anything, yet. I like meditation, but am very interested in hearing some other ideas. Intimacy...now that is another very good thought!

It is lovely of you to take the time to give me your ideas and how you arrived at them. It is very meaningful, indeed.

Now I am off to take a look/see at your blog! Thanks so much, Arty!

Ohhh Babs! Pause really resonates with me, and I also really like Rewind! Now you know what is going to happen, don't you? I am going to have all of these wonderful suggestions and end up right back where I began! LOL

I am glad you like the weaving stuff. I like it a lot, too, but it does take quite a bit of time. The rice paper has a lot of lovely fibers which get a bit tangled. I do have another one in mind, though.

Thanks Babs!

I agree with Babs. This woven thing does resonate--the weaving of art with life, the weaving of contemplation with art with life, etc.

For some reason, a subtitle word which sprang to my mind: Arrival. Don't know why. What about: Weaving the Three.

Love this one!! the golden squares with the random markings/drips balancing the repeating pattern of the woven area. it may be a bit cliche' but as soon as I saw this work... I thought 'interweave'... i'd like to be able to interweave meditation/contemplation with the rest of my life... instead of it just being a separate thing... I guess I should have been a monk lol! namaste Elis

Hi San, This is why I come here for advice! I was focusing on the image, then the weaving. Hello! If I had just turned it around there would have been other possibilities... I can be so thick at times.

"Into the Weave"! That is beautiful, too! As is "Arrival"! They both leave lots of room for personal reflection which I feel is important with this series.

Thanks San!

Weaving - a grid, order

Drips - free flowing, looseness

Elis, Thank You! "Interweave"...again, I am glad you remind me to take a look at the other side of things here.

Oh yes, to interweave contemplation and meditation...maybe I should have became a monk with you LOL

I am glad you like this one...thank you so much!

Thanks Chewy...

Just like me to want to create that tension...or is it balance?

Thanks so much!

The weaving when viewed in small scale looks like a window with rain pouring down onto it on a dark night.

And the painted squares have rivulets.

As for a name I've erased every suggestion...

Thank You Daphne! I have never thought of it in this way...like rain! That is very interesting, indeed. I am always so interested in hearing what people see in my work! Rain...must be spring in Winnipeg!

Best

Why yes Kim, it is spring. I can't imagine what gave it away!

:) No, one could never guess! LOL

Thanks Daphne!

This is so beautiful Kim! What a great idea and it's so effective!

I'm not sure what you should call it. To me it evokes feelings of comfort and safety because it's blanket like. I'm sure that whatever you choose will suit it. I like all of your ideas.

Andrea and Kim said...

Thanks Fiona...well, I have some bad ideas, too...not all that great with something with a traditional flare! :)

A Blanket! Well, it is a blanket, isn't it? Woven, heavy, covering...I like that, too! Thanks for the great idea!
